In Bloom

One of my girl friends is getting married in May! I am in the bridal party and with the big day around the corner, so are all the fun gatherings from the bridal shower to the bachelorette party. The bridal shower is in two weeks and I have been on the hunt for the perfect spring dress. I have a pair of baby blue strappy heels I really want to wear, so I have been drawn to shades of blue... and floral. Here are my top 4 picks!

A Night of Terror

New York City has had a rough 24 hours. A tragic explosion in the lower east side of Manhattan yesterday after noon and an apartment fire on the Upper East Side just hours later was nothing short of terrifying. The fire that took place in the upper east side hit very close to home.

In New York, sirens are as normal as breathing, and due to that I usually do not think much of it. After last night, I will never hear a siren the same way.

I awoke last night to numerous fire engines and someone shouting "Fire!" At first, I was not sure if I was partially dreaming, but the stench of smoke hit my nose and the next thing I knew I was out of bed, drawing back my curtain, and terror instantly rippled through my body.

This is what I saw. After staring in awe, panic set in and I went to wake my roommates. There were so many thought running through my head. My first instinct was to call 911, but firefighters and Red Cross were already at the scene. I saw residents of the building running out into the streets. Then my safety and the safety of our building came to mind. Fear and panic were taking over. I called my father, who had a troubled tone in his voice that only happens when a father receives a phone call from his daughter who is 500 miles away calling at 1 am. I reassured him I was ok, my roommates were okay, but I wanted to let him know the building across the street was on fire. I told him we decided to go outside to find out if we needed to evacuate, to find out any information. Were the gas lines the problem? What should we do? Where could we go if we had to leave? The questions kept piling up. He said he loved me and to be in touch and be safe. It was all I needed to slightly ease my racing heart.

My roommates and I stepped outside to be hit by fresh air which was strangely calming. As we walked closer to the sidewalk, the heat of the fire kissed our skin. Embers were floating to the ground, pieces of the building were crashing down in slow motion. I felt as though I was in a Michael Bay film. But no, this was happening. This was really happening.

A man with a dog took cover under the awing of our building. He was a resident of the building being engulfed by unforgiving flames. Everyone had gotten out safely, and now we were all staring in disbelief as this building, people's homes, burned and crumbled before our eyes.

We watched as firefighters ran in and out of the building with hoses and axes. They broke through windows and attacked the raging fire with water and a headstrong bravery. A cherry picker with two firefighters inside took aim at the top floor of the building to put out the flames. They combatted the fire in what seemed like a hopeless battle, until finally about 2 hours later, the fire was contained and only smoke was left.

My roommates and I had gone back into our apartment before the fire had been contained and continued to watch from my bedroom window. The smoke had trapped itself in our lungs and being outside had become dangerous as embers and pieces of the building fell. Even after the fire was out and everyone was safe, the visions of blazing orange wrath left me uneasy and as exhaustion set in.

Lying in my bed, my thoughts drifted to my neighbors whose home was taken from them. People whose life had been altered by this fire. They were safe, most importantly, but their belongings- their pictures and dishes and all the things they owned in the world- were lost or seeped with smoke, a scent that will linger and be a reminder of this night.

Somehow, eventually, my eyes closed. Upon waking up this morning, for a moment, I was unsure if the hours prior had been a dream, but just a peak out my window at a charred, lifeless building and I knew for certain it was not. The fire was gone, but the pain and fear was left in the rubble and blackened brick.

Unboxing: March Ipsy

True Life: I Am a Beauty Junkie. I have been a loyal subscriber to Birchbox for 3-4 years, but I just can't get enough! After a long internal battle, I decided to try out Ipsy. I received my first Ipsy Glam Bag last week and I was pleasantly surprised.

Coolway Glow Oil Treatment- To be honest, I have not tried this yet, and I am not sure I will. The word "oil" makes me nervous unless it has to do with cooking. I know there are great benefits to hair oil and face oil, but I just haven't hopped on the bandwagon yet.

Pixi by petra Mineral Duo- I love these colors. I tend to lean towards neutrals for my eyes, and this little compact is perfect for traveling or throwing in your bag for touch ups.

Crown Concealer Brush- I am slowly building up my brush collection. I have always been one to use my fingers, but I am excited to test this brush out with my new favorite concealer by Make Up Forever.

Chella ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil- I have received this in a past Birchbox and I like it. I don't use it too often, but it has great coverage and is so easy to apply since it is a pencil. The simpler, the better.

NYX Butter Lipstick- I recently purchased 2 NYX Butter Lipsticks after watching Ingrid's Spring Makeup video (haul coming soon!). I love how smooth and light this product is. I have been trying to add ore neutral lip colors to my collection and this shade, Pops, is perfect.

Are you an Ipsy subscriber? I'd love to know what you received in March!

Thoughts On Turning 26

Last week, I turned the big 2-6. Unlike some years when I have felt anxious about adding an extra number to my age, I welcomed 26 with ease and a strange calmness. I have a really good feeling about 2015 and turning 26 is just a part of that journey.

To celebrate, my dearest friends and I had dinner at The Smith. The food and company was wonderful. It can be tricky getting everyone together, and while I was sitting at the table enjoying all of their company, I felt an overwhelming sense of love. Each person at that table, had I known them for years or just a few short months, has made in impact on my life and I am so thankful for them. I tried to convey that in a poorly prepared speech over the noise of the restaurant. I think handwritten notes are in order to truly show my appreciation. it was a perfect night and one I will not soon forget.

The festivities kept going well into the weekend. The day after dinner in the city with friends, I flew home where my father prepared a delicious grilled steak dinner. He is an phenomenal cook. I was so full and tired from traveling, I quickly feel asleep on the couch after my last bite. An hour or so later, I was gently woken up to find my two closest friends standing over me with balloons and gifts. My brother had planned a mini surprise party for me. I was once again flooded with emotions of love and gratitude. For the rest of the night, we enjoyed each others company and laughed until we cried playing Cards Against Humanity.

This birthday was so special thanks to my amazing family and friends and I am so thankful for the memories. Twenty-six is already shaping up to be a great year.

Favorite Quotes

So far, 2015 is shaping up to be quite a year. In two months, I will be graduating. Major milestone. Graduating is so exciting, but with that comes a very stressful few months. The Job Search.
Since graduation is around the corner, I find myself reflecting on past experiences and looking towards the future with endless enthusiasm and a side of fear. I found some quotes that truly speak to everything I am feeling and dealing with, and are good reminders to not get discouraged, believe in the impossible, and remember to step back and breathe every once in a while.

What's in My Bag?

The contents of my purse changes daily, but I always try my best to keep it clean and organized. I have never been one of those girls who finds recipes from two years ago crumpled up at the bottom of my bag. Not to say that my bag is always impeccable, I just hate fumbling through a mess to try and find my keys or a metro card. So, here is a look at the basic items I keep in my Princeton bag.

  1. H&M sunnies.
  2. Hello hand and body lotion.
  3. Tassle keychain from this Etsy shop.
  4. Kleenex slim pack.
  5. H&M laser cut pouch I use as a wallet.
  6. Dolce & Gabbana Perfect Finish Powder Foundation.
  7. e.l.f. brush.
  8. NARS lipstick in Mayflower.
  9. Cocoa Butter chap stick.
  10. Kitsch hair ties.
  11. Winterfresh gum.
What essentials do you always keep on hand?

February Favorites

It's March! March has always been one of my favorite months since it is the month yours truly was born, and it means we are getting closer to Spring! With a new month comes a monthly favorites. In February, here is what I was reaching for daily:

1. Klorane Dry Shampoo- This dry shampoo is the holy grail of all dry shampoos. I have tried MANY dry shampoos and I always come back to Klorane. It has a subtle fresh scent I love and does not leave any of residue in my hair. There are some dry shampoos I have used that leave a stiff, hairspray-like feel. The secret to great second or third day hair is applying the dry shampoo at night before you go to bed and in the morning. Best hair tip I ever received.

2. Revlon Lash Potion Mascara- I have two mascaras that are my go to, but they are a bit pricey. I was in need of a quick refill so I stopped by my local drug store and picked up the Lash Potion. The packaging initially drew me in. I mean, it's beautiful! After using it all month, I will definitely be purchasing this again. It separates and lengthens my lashes and does not clump! There is one tiny downfall. I have found traces of dried flakes on my cheeks. But that is after a looong day. Sometimes, when I want a more dramatic eye, I use this mascara as a base to separate and then put another mascara over it to really coat my lashes. I found this technique also prevents flaking.

3. Evian Facial Spray- This product has become a lifesaver with the cold and drying weather. I spritz a bit of this on after I cleanse my face and then put my moisturizer on while my skin is still damp. Using moisturizer while your skin is still damp helps the creams to really soak in.

4. L'Occitane Roses et Reines- My hands have been painfully dry lately. This hand cream is so luxurious. It smells like fresh roses. The consistency is rather thick so I like to put this lotion on at night so it can work its magic while I sleep.

5. theBalm Read My Lips Lip Gloss- I received this gloss in my February Birchbox and it has been in my purse/on my lips ever since. I love the smell, the color, and how moisturizing it is! It adds just enough color for any makeup look.
