Dress the Part: New Year's

Dress the Part

When I think New Year's, gold, glitter, and champagne run through my head. Staying true to my idea of New Year's festivities, I choose eight dresses than best capture the night. With a majority of these sequined beauties and one feather frock, I would wear a pair of black tights with black booties or heels. Keep jewelry and other accessories to a minimal. Dresses like these need nothing extra. The make a statement all on their own. Finish of the look with a small gold or black clutch to hold necessities, and you are on your way to ringing in the New Year with style and class. How will you start 2013?

Looking Back at 2012

This past year has been incredible. I have done things I still have a hard time wrapping my head around. I finally moved to the city in the Fall followed by promptly landing an incredible internship with Disciples of Haute and attending New York Fashion Week just two weeks after settling in. Even writing this now, I have to stop, pause, and pinch myself. I am so blessed for everything that has come my way this past year. While I am very excited to see what 2013 has in store for me, it is bittersweet to say goodbye to 2012. It has been a year to remember!

Happy Holidays!

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind! Finals, Christmas shopping, and spending a few days in Parris Island for my brothers gradation from basic training for the Marines had me running all over the place this December. It is finally Christmas Eve, and all of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is winding down. I am looking forward to relaxing and enjoying time together with my family and friends. This Christmas is especially wonderful with my brother home after three months of basic training. I missed him terribly and so proud of his incredible accomplishment. Our family is so lucky to be able to spend the holidays with Steven. Thank you to everyone who is serving our country and sacrificing their holiday this year. I wish you a safe and wonderful holiday season, and I pray you come home soon.

Cheers to a warm and safe holiday!
Merry Christmas!

Accessorize Your Winter Coat

Accessorize Your Winter Coat

Finding a great coat for the winter weather is half the battle when it comes to being fashion forward. Accessories are just as important as your coat for battling the cold weather and looking stylish and chic. Fur collars are very in this winter, and what better way to spruce up a camel colored coat than a faux fur leopard scarf! Studded gloves can add an edgy vibe to a black and grey jacket. Hats are perfect to keep your ears toasty and add statement to your tan trench. I love infinity scarves. A grey infinity scarf is a great way to soften a leather jacket and keep you cozy. I recently picked up a maroon beanie from Forever 21 that would go great with a green parka. Cape coats are also very in this season. Some cape coats have 3/4 sleeves. These patterned arm warmers will add texture and style.
What accessories do you love to pair with your coat?

Animal Print Sweaters

Animal Sweaters

I may be jumping on this band wagon a bit too late, but I am loving the animal print sweaters! My favorite is the beige Wildfox Couture sweater. I am definitely going to be checking out my local Forever 21s and H&Ms to see if they have designed their own version. Pair this with an oxford button down underneath and a fun necklace with skinnies or a tweet skirt and you are good to go!

Tis the Season

I love the holidays. The lights, the smell of balsam, and the cheerful spirit of the season. This is my first time being in the city around Christmastime and it has been such a treat. There are lights on every street, avenue, and tree. The smell of pine and balsam is on each corner where trees and wreathes can be found for sale. I think it is safe to say this will be a very memorable holiday.

Hope you are enjoying the holiday season!

Edgy Integration

I like to play around with trends while still staying true to my style. Skulls and crossbones, studs, and spikes are very in right now. I have seen so many skull bracelets, and I think they are awesome, just not for me. I am, however, embracing the skulls look in a fabulous top I picked up from Zara the other day. It is a long top with half sleeves that are a faux leather material and a blue cheetah print velvet skull. I am obsessed. I wore it yesterday to class tucked into a pair of skinny jeans, my studded flats, a green Michael Kors army jacket I scored on clearance at TJMaxx for $60!, and my favorite black eternity scarf. Perfection. Today, I am flying home for Thanksgiving and am wearing the top again (Obsessed- I told you) with black leggings and brown boots. I truly never thought I would own anything with a skull on it, but I found something that is edgy and me. A few other edgy accessories I work into my wardrobe is a gold and silver spiked bracelet set and spiky earrings from Forever 21 and my new favorite studded flats from ShoeDazzle.
How do you integrate edgy into your wardrobe?

The Coat Craze

Coat Craze

There are so many amazing coats for this season. The selection goes far beyond your standard black coat. Little details such as a leather lapel, studs, side zippers, and asymmetrical lines take this season's coats to the next level in fashion. A coat's sole purpose shouldn't be to just keep you warm and toasty during the winter months, it should add to your style and overall outfit. Over-sized coats are big trend for this season. My favorite approach to the over-sized look is the cape coat. The beige cape coat pictured above is très chic. The fur collar is a simple addition that makes a big statement. Another fun trend this season is colored coats. I have seen everything from red to green to colorful patterns. What is your favorite take on coats for this season?

Ring Bling

An over-sized cocktail ring has been my statement piece as of late. I'll get ready in the morning and throw on a pair of simple studs, my watch, and a big ring. I have found some amazing rings on Jewelmint, Forever 21, Old Navy, and street vendors in NYC.

{From left to right: Jewelmint ring, Old Navy Leopard ring, Old Navy cocktail ring, Handmade ring bought from NYC street vendor.}

Are you a fan of big ring bling? What are your go-to jewelry pieces?

Weekend Adventures

Last Sunday, I went on an adventure to the Brooklyn Bridge. I had been wanting to walk the bridge for some time. The weather was perfect on Sunday and made for a great day to explore. The bridge itself was a wonder to see. The structure is incredible, but the true beauty were the views. I was in awe. If you looked downtown, you could see the towering financial district and the Statue of Liberty off in the distance. When you looked uptown, you could see the whole city including the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. It was breathtaking. I love this city.

Blessings

Thanksgiving is one week away. I am so looking forward to it. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Each year my family goes to my aunt and uncle's gorgeous cottage. We sit in front of the crackling fire eating crackers and cheese before the big meal, and we all get to reconnect. With all the the excitement of seeing my family, having some time off, and gorging on delicious food, I usually forget to stop, take a moment, and be thankful. Thankful to for my beautiful family, yummy home cooked food, and everything that I have been blessed with. I feel that this year, my thankfulness is especially strong after the horrific damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. As I think about all that I am thankful for, my thoughts go out to all those who have been effected by Frankenstorm.

Today, I had two experiences that made me realize how blessed I am. It is simple things that I tend to overlook that I truly should be the most thankful for. It is much easier to reflect on your blessings around Thanksgiving, but I am want to work on acknowledging my blessings more often.
What are you thankful for? Do you want to help those effected by Sandy? Check out Redcross.org to see how you can help.

Simple Luxuries

I love to read. Unfortunately, with my schedule I am not always able to enjoy that simple luxury. While, I was at home last week I ventured to my nearest Barnes & Noble and decided to pick up a few books. I did not really have anything in mind, but I am very happy with what I stumbled upon.

I love books with fun facts about some of my favorite places, so when I saw Little Known Facts about Well-Known Places: New York it was a no-brainer. I have learned so much about the city I love and it is such a fun read. This is a great coffee table book, and I can't wait to display it for others to enjoy when I have a place of my own.
I read a great review about Bond Girl by Erin Duffy so when I saw it on the shelf I grabbed it. I am currently halfway through, and I hate having to put it down. I have been scouring a bit each day on my subway commute to school. I feel like a true New Yorker when I read on the subway, and I love it. It makes the ride much quicker and allows me to relax and gives me chance to read something that isn't a textbook.
The third book I picked up is Her Fearful Symmetry by Andrey Niffenegger. This book caught my attention because it is written by the same author of The Time Traveler's Wife. I adore that book, so I thought I would give another one of her books a try.
Have you read any of these books? What other books do you recommend for when I finish these ones?

Snickerdoodles

While I was home last week, I was able to do a lot of baking, which I have missed since moving to the city. One of the simplest, but most fun and delicious cookies, in my opinion, is the Snickerdoodle. With most cookies you scoop out the dough with a spoon and plop it on the cooking tray, but I love being able to work the Snickerdoodle dough. Rolling out balls of dough and tossing it around the cinnamon and sugar mix was my favorite part of the Snickerdoodle process as a little girl baking with my mom. It turns out, years later it is still my favorite. I used this recipe and whipped up a warm and gooey batch in no time.

October Favorites

October Favorites

It's November, so you know what that means... October Favorites! I have done monthly favorites in the past (they are my favorite to read and write), but this month I cannot say enough good things about the products that stole my heart this month. These are products that, I honestly, see myself using forever! So, let's get started!

1.) The Rusk W8less Leave-in Treatment is now a vital part of my hair routine. This product offers 12 benefits in just a few sprays to my damp hair. It smooths, protects, strengthens, moisturizes, adds shine, protects hair from heat damage, etc. This stuff does it all and more without your hair feeling weighed down or greasy. It is amazing! I discovered this product when I received a sample size at a fashion show during NYFW. I recently used up the sample size that lasted me two months! I picked up the full size at Ulta the other day where they had a great deal going on, two Rusk items for $20. I grabbed the leave-in treatment and a huge can of hairspray. I will let you know what I think of the hairspray! If you want to try out this awesome product you can get it for a steal at Amazon or Beauty-Mart.

2.) My second favorite for October is my gorgeous Michael Kors watch. I picked this up in September and have worn it everyday since. I  snagged it for an amazing deal at Macys. Look out for coupons that offer a discount on the whole store so you can use it on designer watches. Most coupons do not include some designers, but with the holidays coming up, I bet there will be a few great discounts floating around.

3.) I have used quite a few dry shampoos, I even did a comparison post a while back, but I have finally settled on a go-to brand. The Batiste original formula is fabulous. It blends into my dark hair with ease, and it is by far the best dry shampo I have ever used.

4.) Up until mid-October, I was using the Clinique Acne Solutions Cleansing Foam. I loved it, I thought it worked well, and I was convinced I would use it for a very long time. Well, I ran out of it during October and really did not want to dish out 20 dollars on face wash. Plus, with living in the city, I'm trying to keep my spending down until I get a good job. So, I ventured into Duane Reade and decided to try out the Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser. This product is amazing!!! My skin has never been better since I started using this. It clears my skin, evens the tone, and leaves it so soft. It is less than half the price of Clinique and does four times more! I am sold. I knew Aveeno had great products, but there cleansing foam is hands down the best!

5.) I was looking to find a great liquid liner for awhile, but I was nervous because previous liquid liners I had purchased were too runny and would go in my eye and irritant it severely. I went to Sephora one day and just decided to try out the Sephora collection. It was pretty inexpensive and went on smoothly and easily when I tested it on my hand. The next day I tested it out and I was sold. It was not runny like other liners I had tried, it was so simple to apply, and once it dried it did not smudge. It also stayed on the entire day! I was very impressed by the quality of the Sephora collection. I want to try a few other items from their line and will definitely pick up another liner when my current one runs out.

6.) The last item of my October Favorites is the Zara 666 5th Ave perfume. Not only does Zara offer trendy and well made clothes, they have an incredible perfume collection for a great price. I couldn't choose between the 666 5th Ave scent or the Cherry one, so I picked up both in the sample size for around ten dollars! The 666 5th Ave has floral scents as well as light wood scent. The description reads "Floral-fruity-woody. Crisp apple, passion fruit and watermelon." It might sound strange, but I love it and always get compliments on it. I am almost out of the sample size and cannot wait to pick up the full size. It comes in a chic bottle, and, did I mention it only costs 15 dollars! Most perfume will cost quintuple that price. This perfume smells heavenly and will not break the bank.

What were your favorites for the month of October? Have you tried any of the products I mentioned?

Monster Mash

Last night, I threw a little Halloween soiree. I baked up some goodies and put together a fun and simple Halloween costume. I was a geeky librarian, and my friend Danielle was an adorable lady bug. My friends and I handed out candy to the trick-or-treaters, ate some ghoulish treats, played Mad Gab, and, of course, listened to great Halloween tunes like Monster Mash and Thriller. It was the perfect way to celebrate this silly and spooky holiday.
What did you do to celebrate Halloween?

Enchanted Forest

I was lucky enough to make it home before Hurricane Sandy hit New York City. I have been staying cozy by the fire and drinking hot cocoa while the days have been filled with rain. Today, I ventured to the beautiful state park minutes from my dad's house to capture the gorgeous fall colors before the cold comes and leaves the trees bare. I picked up this sweater recently and love the strips and cable knit designs. It is the perfect fall and winter sweater. Warm, but light. I paired it with my favorite jeans and a flats for a casual fall outfit.
Stay warm and safe! My thoughts are with everyone back in the city and all the areas that have been effected by this horrible storm.

Halloween Costume: Masquerade Ball

Masquerade Ball

Halloween is just around the corner! I am not positive what I am going to be, but this is one of my options. I love dressing up in girly, elegant costumes. I have never been one to go overly sexy or scary. Just somewhere in the middle. The great things about this costume is that it is relatively easy to make or buy. The main item you need is a mask, which you can find for around 10 dollars or make for more or less the same amount. Then you just need a dress, you many have one in your closet you can wear or try raiding a friends closet. I think lace tights would be a great way to spice up your outfit and stay warm. Red or colored heels would add a touch of color. Simple jewelry, such as rings and a bracelet for your accessories. I would avoid a necklace so you can add a subtle touch of sex appeal by showing off your neck and shoulders. Plus, you have so much going on with the mask, you don't want to take away from that. For hair, it could go either way. A fancy updo or loose curls would be gorgeous. Smokey eyes with glittery mascara and red lips would complete this exquisite costume.
Hope this idea helped you out of you are having trouble deciding what to be for Halloween!

Dorm Details: Halloween Decorations

While I love living in New York City, I miss having my own space. The dorms are nice, but not very spacious and quite limiting. But I am making the best of it. Since Halloween is just two weeks away, I spent this weekend decorating my little space with fun and festive adornments. Here are some easy and budget friendly ideas and DIYs.

Glitter Jack-O'-Lantern

Many dorms don't allow you to carve pumpkins for health and safety reasons, but that doesn't mean you can't have a pumpkin at all! Instead of carving a pumpkin, you can use glitter or paint to create a fun jack-o'-lantern face.
Here is what you'll need.

How to:
  1. Tape off the eyes, nose, and mouth creating any shape and size you'd like your jack-o'-lantern face to be.
  2. Use a paint brush or your finger to spread the glue inside the taped area.
  3. Quickly cover the glue with desired glitter. I used black, but I think purple would have been fun too!
  4. Let sit for about an hour or more to dry, then remove tape to see your handy work!

You could also just make fun designs on your pumpkin, like I did to this baby pumpkin.

Once your pumpkins are dry, pick a place to display them. You can also add other items to you festive corner, such as Halloween candy (my favorite is candy corn) or flowers in a mason jar.

Here is my festive ode to Halloween. I love how it spruces up my room and adds a touch of home.

This fun DIY is perfect for dorm life or a unique way to display your pumpkins at home.
How do you like to decorate for Halloween?

Fall Footwear Wishlist

Fall Footwear Wishlist

There are so many amazing shoes for this Fall. I am not a shoe fanatic, but with all the amazing styles I am seeing it won't be long before I will become a shoe hoarder. While I was creating this image, I actually purchased those adorable brown oxfords. They are en route to my feet as I type this. I cannot wait to pair them with a cute dress or burgundy pants. I am loving the loaf style flats and can't wait to get my hands, or feet, on them! I found some fun colors on ShoeDazzle today and I think I might go for it. Leopard is such a fun pattern, and I don't think leopard will ever go out of style. With that said, I have no idea why I don't own a pair of leopard flats. I need to fix that on the double. Classic black boots are a staple for any wardrobe. I am in serious need of a new pair. The pair I have is a few years old and quite dated. Booties have been around for some time. They were great in the summer with a sundress or cutoffs, and I think they go great with skinny jeans. I have a pair in a tan suede that I love, but the grey color is beautiful!
What shoe purchases have you made lately, and what styles are you coveting?

Gypsy

Traveling Fool

I feel like a modern day gypsy with all the traveling I am doing lately. But don't get me wrong, I love to travel, and when traveling comfort is key for me. A comfy, over-sized sweater is my favorite fall accessory. Pair it with a dress and you are good to go. Dresses are perfect for when you are sitting for long periods of time. Keep it simple with flats and bring a pair of sock to throw on for extra warmth. The weather is cooling down, which means I can utilize my favorite Fall accessory- scarves. They can add a pop of color and extra coziness to any outfit. As far as jewelry goes, I like to keep it simple and just stick with my watch. My non-apparel travel necessities is a good book, current magazines, iPod, and, of course, a phone to play games or chit chat. I like to throw all of this can go in a good sized bag. I have been traveling by train, which is great because I can bring snacks and beverages and toss that in my bag as well.
What is your ideal travel outfit?
